"Bamboo" is not your usual jazz band. With exciting takes on "Sting" tunes, jazz "standards" and funk tunes by such artists as John Scofield. "Bamboo" extends them as platforms for improvisations that move your feet.
"Bamboo" has been together in various forms since 1998. Its members currently include Paul Henson (Guitar and vocals), Patrick Jelk (Bass), Mark Madden (Drums), and John Williams (Guitar).
Paul, the melodic center of "Bamboo", has played with many bands including swing band the "Rugcutters", jazz/funk band "Ute", and latin extravaganza "Expresso Bongo". With these bands he has played at the Manly jazz festival, the Basement in Sydney, the Port jazz festival in Adelaide, the Bert Newton Show, the Adelaide Grand Prix Ball, and been support act for Joan Armatrading, "Blood, Sweat and Tears", and Courtney Pine.
Patrick, the heart beat of "Bamboo", originally from Geneva, Switzerland where he played extensively. He has been in Adelaide since 1990 where he has played in various cover bands before playing with "E type jazz" in its original form. Since 1998 he has been playing with "Bamboo" in various pub's and restaurants.
Mark provides the rhythmic colour and passion for "Bamboo". He arrived in Adelaide in 1991 after playing extensively in Sydney for 15 years. Mark also played with "E type jazz" in its original form before forming "Bamboo" in 1998.
John provides harmonic colour for the already formidable rhythm section. He completed studies in jazz at Adelaide Uni. after playing in several original rock bands. He currently plays with "Jade", an acoustic jazz trio that regularly plays at Cafés and Restaurants, and "One Bulk Mango", an original funk/rock band that plays regularly in Adelaide pubs.
